ASO that compounds: from listed to ranked

Turn a tidy store listing into a growth loop where paid search feeds organic keywords, custom pages match intent, and review velocity defends your rank.

Where to start

Benchmark gut-check

Open App Store Connect > Benchmarks and compare your conversion rate to your category's distribution. Write down whether you're above or below median โ€” that single number decides your next move.

First-screenshot rewrite

Replace your first screenshot so it leads with your single strongest benefit in a headline a 5-year-old understands, plus one supporting visual. Keep caption text under 20% of the image.

Keyword field cleanup

Open your 100-character keyword field. Delete any word already in your title or subtitle (duplication = wasted weight), remove spaces after commas, drop plurals, and refill the reclaimed space with winnable long-tail terms.

Long-tail keyword hunt

List 10 terms your ideal user would actually type. Score each on relevance x traffic x winnability and pick the 2 sweet-spot terms (high relevance, low competition) to work into your subtitle.

Ship one PPO test

Set up an Apple Product Page Optimization (or Google Store Listing Experiment) testing exactly ONE element โ€” usually screenshot 1 โ€” against your current version, and let it run to significance.

โšกOnce it's working

Double-down plays for after a channel has proven out.

Build the Discovery-to-Exact converter funnel in Apple Search Ads

โฑ 2-3 hrs to set up, then ~30 min/week

Run a Search Match / Discovery ad group on a small budget for 2 weeks, then pull every term it surfaced with a 40%+ tap-to-install rate and meaningful impressions. Promote each proven converter into its own Exact Match ad group with a dedicated bid, and add it as a negative-exact in Discovery so you stop double-bidding. Repeat weekly.

ASA and organic aren't separate โ€” they're a loop. Paid installs on a keyword lift your organic rank for that keyword, so Discovery becomes a paid R&D engine that hands you a growing list of proven converters that then rank organically for free.

Pair Custom Product Pages to your top keyword clusters

โฑ 3-4 hrs per page (design + copy)

Identify your 2-3 highest-intent keyword clusters ('budget planner for freelancers' vs 'expense tracker'), build a CPP for each with screenshots and promo text that mirror that exact intent, and assign each as the destination for the matching Exact Match ad group. Flag your best CPPs to surface in organic search.

A generic page converts the average searcher; a page echoing the user's exact query converts the motivated one. CPPs lifted conversion to ~56% and now appear in organic search. SoundCloud cut CPI 39% and lifted conversions 58% doing exactly this.

Engineer review velocity, not just review count

โฑ 1-2 hrs to reposition the prompt + ongoing

Move your in-app ratings prompt to fire right after a clear 'win' moment (task completed, goal hit) rather than on launch, and cap it to non-intrusive timing. Target a steady weekly inflow of fresh reviews instead of a one-time star bump. Track reviews-per-week as a metric.

The algorithm weights velocity and recency, not just the star average โ€” a 4.2 app with 100 fresh reviews/week typically outranks a 4.5 app with 5/week. Crossing back above 4.0 matters too: tap-through and downloads drop ~50% below it. Fresh reviews are a decaying rank signal, so a continuous flow compounds.

Reply fast to every negative review and convert it

โฑ ~20 min/day

Respond to all 1-3 star reviews within 24-48 hours: acknowledge, name the fix, ask them to re-rate once it ships. Reply to recent positives too. Mine the complaints for the recurring objection and answer it preemptively in your screenshots/promo text.

Response speed and recency feed the healthy-review profile the algorithm rewards, and reviewers frequently raise their stars after a fix โ€” turning a drag into velocity. The complaints also hand you the exact conversion objections to neutralize on the page, so one workflow improves rank, rating, and conversion at once.

Unlock hidden keyword real estate via secondary locales

โฑ 2-3 hrs for the first 2-3 locales

In App Store Connect, add a second English keyword set to a secondary US-indexed locale (English UK/Australia, or Spanish Mexico) packed with different long-tail terms than your primary field. Activate 2-3 secondary locales to multiply indexed keyword space without touching your main title or keyword field.

The US store indexes keywords from up to nine secondary locales, so well-optimized apps can access close to 10x the baseline keyword space โ€” the character slots already exist, you're just filling free inventory. The lowest-cost, highest-leverage ranking move available.

Run In-App Events to earn discovery surfaces and featuring

โฑ 3-4 hrs per event, on a recurring cadence

Publish a recurring In-App Event (a challenge, a seasonal moment, a feature reveal) tied to a real product hook. Events appear on your product page, in search, and on the Today tab; submit with strong creative and keep your rating above 4.0. Use the event window to concentrate install velocity.

In-app events add discovery surfaces and create install-velocity spikes that indirectly lift organic rank, and they're the most credible on-ramp to editorial featuring โ€” a Today-tab feature can drive up to a 200% install jump in week one. Most apps ignore events, so a recurring cadence leapfrogs competitors.

star rating climbed 2.2 โ†’ 4.7 in two weeks; prompting only at delight moments made 40x more reviews, nearly all 5-star

Fire the review prompt at a real moment of joy (right after a win), not on a timer. Prompting less but at the right second floods you with 5-stars โ€” and ratings lift every download you already earn.

indie dev ranked #1 for 10 keywords and top-10 for 65 of 154; page views doubled within ~9 days of one metadata update

A solo dev can't outbid anyone on 'cocktails', so don't try โ€” hunt low-competition, high-relevance keywords and own them. The unwinnable head term is a trap; the long tail is where indies rank #1.

A/B testing the app icon alone lifted tap-on-Get by 73.7%

Your icon is the single highest-leverage pixel you own โ€” test it like a thumbnail. People decide to install on a visual gut-read before they read a word, so a cleaner icon can nearly double tap rate.
