Reddit: from karma to compounding

Turn a few good threads into an owned community, an AI-citation moat, and a tracked funnel that brings users in on autopilot.

Where to start

Mine three pain threads

Search your two target subreddits for phrases like 'is there a tool that', 'I hate when', and 'how do you all', and copy 3 real complaints into a doc verbatim.

Leave one genuinely helpful comment

Find a question in your niche community you can answer well and write a complete, no-link reply that would help even if you had nothing to sell.

Warm a fresh community account

Spend 10 minutes upvoting and reading in a new target subreddit you haven't earned standing in yet; do not post.

Draft a 'what I learned' post

Write a content-first post that teaches something from building your app (a number, a mistake, a before/after) with the product mentioned only at the end, and check that subreddit's self-promo rules first.

Reply-sprint your live thread

For any post that's live, answer every comment within the first few hours, especially the critical ones, before doing anything else.

Once it's working

Double-down plays for after a channel has proven out.

Build a high-intent keyword radar

2 hrs to set up, 30 min/day to work the queue

List 15-20 buyer-intent phrases people use right before they need your product ('best tool for X', 'alternative to Y', 'how do I automate Z'). Set up F5Bot or a saved Reddit search + an alerts tool to ping you the moment any fires across your 5 core subreddits. Reply within 1-2 hours to 10-25 threads/week, leading with the answer and naming your product only when it genuinely fits.

Speed + intent is the whole game. The first genuinely-helpful comment on a fresh high-intent thread earns the upvotes, becomes the top reply, and then gets frozen as the canonical answer Google and AI engines cite for months. You stop hunting and let intent come to you.

Reddit GEO: become the AI-cited answer

3-4 hrs/week

Pick your 10 highest-value buyer queries and find the Reddit threads already ranking for them in Google + cited by ChatGPT/Perplexity. Add a structured, encyclopedic comment (comparison table, clear pros/cons, your product as ONE named option among several). Then recruit 2-3 happy users to independently mention you in their own words on other threads. Re-run the AI queries weekly.

Reddit is the single most-cited domain in Google AI Overviews and Perplexity, and threads index within hours since the Google licensing deal. Unaffiliated, third-party mentions carry far more weight with LLMs than anything from your own handle — so this builds a recommendation moat competitors can't buy.

Found a non-branded community you own

1-2 hrs/day for the first 45 days, then ~30 min/day

Start a subreddit around the PROBLEM/aspiration your users share, not your brand (e.g. r/IndieAppMarketing, not r/YourApp). Seed it with 20-30 genuinely useful posts before inviting anyone, then funnel every DM and thread you're in toward it. Post daily, reward members with flair/AMAs, and prize 500 engaged members over 5,000 lurkers.

Owning the watering hole flips you from guest to host. You control the top search result for your category, get a permanent audience you can post to without spam risk, and turn every future launch into a captive distribution event instead of a cold start.

Earn the AMA, then cash it

6-8 weeks of background presence, ~1 day to run

Pick one 30k-100k member niche subreddit (not r/IAmA — pre-qualified beats massive). Spend 6-8 weeks becoming a recognizable helpful name there, then pitch the mods a founder AMA tied to a real hook (a build-in-public milestone, a free tool, original data). Prep 8-10 seed questions, line up a dedicated landing page, and answer for a solid 3-4 hour block.

An AMA from a stranger gets ignored; an AMA from someone the community already trusts converts. It compresses months of one-off comments into a single high-visibility event that spikes branded searches and signups, and the thread keeps ranking long after.

Stop sending Reddit to your homepage

3-4 hrs to build pages, 20 min/week to review

Build subreddit-specific landing pages with messaging that mirrors each community's exact pain and language (r/webdev sees a dev testimonial; r/Entrepreneur sees the time-saved angle). Tag every link with utm_source=reddit&utm_campaign=<subreddit>, review conversion BY subreddit weekly, then kill the dead ones and pour your hours into the 1-2 that convert.

A page tuned for Google ads dies on Reddit traffic. Honoring where the visitor came from can multiply conversion, and per-subreddit UTM data turns gut feel into a ranked list of where your next hour of commenting is worth the most.

Mine winners into a cross-channel engine

1-2 hrs per winning post

When a post or comment overperforms, extract it. Cross-post to 1-2 adjacent subreddits a few hours apart (only after it has momentum), then repurpose the exact angle and wording into a blog post, an X thread, and an email. Keep a running doc of every line that got upvotes — that's your validated messaging library.

A viral thread is free market research and pre-validated copy. Each winner becomes IP you redeploy across every channel, so one good post compounds into a week of content — and language that won on Reddit reliably wins everywhere else.

📈 Proof it works

Listening.com

2022-23

~725K views, 5.7K upvotes, 3,000 installs + 1,500 signups from one r/InternetIsBeautiful post

The subreddit banned app-download links, so Derek built a web version just for the launch instead of fighting the rule. Bend your product to the community's format and the community lets you in.

Wappkit

2024

60 paying customers in 45 days, $0 ad spend, ~20% click-to-trial

Alex ran a 70/30 ratio: 70% genuinely helpful answers in high-intent threads, 30% product mention. He never sold, he solved — even admitting the UI was rough — and the trust converted.

Supabase

2023-24

community drove 80%+ of growth on the way to $100M+ ARR; 30K+ Discord members

Paul spent 2-3 hours a day answering Postgres questions, often without mentioning Supabase at all. Being the most useful person in the room compounds into word-of-mouth no ad can buy.

SoloPush

2024

$2K MRR in 19 days, 20K+ visitors and 300+ users (60+ paying) from Reddit + X

Abbas built the exact thing solo makers were already asking for in the threads, then posted it where they gather. When the community is hungry for it, one honest post spreads on its own.
